Energy Storage

At a Glance

Challenge:  Stationary storage is needed everywhere, but lithium-ion brings fire risk and fluorinated (PFAS) chemistry, and lead-acid brings short life, heavy weight and toxic lead.

Solution:  A non-flammable aqueous zinc–manganese battery that uses plasma-conditioned water (PAW) as its electrolyte. It is fluorine-free and built from abundant materials on converted lead-acid production lines.

Status:  Patent applications filed (provisional, 2026); IP landscape and patentability assessment complete; prototype and partner development planned.

THE CHALLENGE

Grid, data-center, defense and public-infrastructure storage demand is growing fast. Grid-scale storage is about a $10–15 billion market today and is projected to exceed $100 billion by 2035 (cite the source reports).

Lithium-ion can undergo thermal runaway, which limits indoor, shipboard and critical-facility use and requires gas suppression, ventilation and climate control.

Flourinated electrolytes and binders add PFAS regulatory and disposal risk.

Lithium, cobalt and graphite supply chains are geographically concentrated, which is an economic-security issue.

Lead-acid is safe and recyclable but has limited cycle life and weight and environmental drawbacks.

Our Approach

Most battery research tries to improve electrode materials. Tellapure’s insight is that the electrolyte can be made into a precisely controlled industrial product.  Plasma conditioning is used to stabilize the electrolyte, not to make it an oxidant, which suppresses the failure modes that shorten the life of aqueous batteries.

Battery-grade PAW electrolyte:  Water conditioned by our patented DBD plasma, held within controlled intrinsic metrics (redox potential, pH, peroxide trace and conductivity) suppressing critical flow-battery issues, e.g., zinc dendrites, corrosion, side reactions and gas evolution.

Continuous, quality-controlled manufacturing:  An in-line production system (purification, multilayer DBD reactor, catalyst stabilization, degassing, filtration, reconstitution) with real-time sensor feedback, so every batch is reproducible and qualified.

Zinc–manganese cell:  A zinc anode and manganese dioxide cathode, with an optional semi-solid gel electrolyte for leak resistance and dendrite blocking.

Self-maintaining operation:  The battery management system monitors electrolyte quality alongside voltage, temperature and resistance, and can reactivate a drifting electrolyte (recover, re-treat, requalify, reinject) without opening the cell.

Multiple architectures: sealed cells, circulating (flow-style) systems with an in-loop conditioning module, and containerized storage systems with fleet-level monitoring.

BENEFITS

Economic Security:  No reliance on geographically concentrated critical minerals.
Environment:  Fluorine-free; reduces PFAS release into the environment; recyclable metals.
Safety and Siting:  Suitable for hospitals, rail, defense sites, data centers and disaster-prevention facilities.
Easy Migration:  Gradual mixed-fleet replacement of existing lead-acid installations.
