Water Purification

At a Glance

Challenge:  Algal and cyanobacterial blooms, odor, biofilm and nutrient pollution degrade ponds, reflecting pools, fountains, reservoirs and other managed water bodies.

Solution:  Chemical-free plasma-activated water (PAW) combined with conventional water treatment, which suppresses algal growth and odor and maintains water quality without algaecides or chlorine.

Status:  Technology fielded in Japan.  A potential first U.S. project is the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C., where Tellapure USA intends to offer the equipment to the National Park Service at no cost for a proof-of-concept and technology demonstration program.

The Challenge

Excess nutrients, chiefly phosphorus in make-up water, runoff, leaf fall and waterfowl, are the root cause. Biofilm and sediment on pool floors and in pipework build up nutrients and release them again.

Water quality is declining in many ornamental, recreational and municipal water bodies. Algal blooms, odor and toxins are the most visible signs.

At public sites, monuments and parks, where wildlife and visitors are close by, chemical algaecides, chlorine and their by-products are often unacceptable.

Many sites have liners, coatings or finishes that aggressive pH swings or strong oxidants would damage.

Conventional fixes usually treat the symptom (killing algae) rather than the cause (nutrients), so the blooms return.

Our Approach

Clean it once.  Stop what enters.  Never let it return.

Stage 1, Initial Reset (one time):  Remove existing biomass, then clean basin surfaces with low-pressure PAW to break down biofilm, attached algae and dormant cells without damaging coatings.

Stage 2, Inlet Interception (permanent):  Incoming water passes through a treatment train (PAW pre-treatment, micro-dose coagulation, filtration, adsorption polishing, PAW delivery) that holds phosphorus below the level at which cyanobacteria can proliferate.

Stage 3, Side Stream Polishing (permanent): continuously treats circulating water to remove diffuse nutrients and destroy dissolved algal toxins and taste-and-odor compounds.

Nutrient recovery:  Harvested algae and sludge are treated with PAW to destroy toxins, and phosphorus can be recovered as struvite fertilizer.  See graphic below Stage 3, Filtration.

How It Works

Water is drawn off, treated in a side-stream train, and returned -- phosphorus is captured as a recoverable resource.

Gentle on liners and coatings: mild chemistry where the water touches the basin.

Benefits

No algaecides or chlorine in the water; safe for wildlife and visitors.

Reuses existing pumps, filters and piping; modular and low power.

Removes the nutrients that drive blooms, so results last.

Applicable to reflecting pools, fountains, park ponds, reservoirs, golf-course and campus water features, and stormwater ponds.
